How cultural diversity enriches the events sector

Increasingly, cultural diversity is of central importance to the artistic planning of organisations in the events sector. Not just on stage, but behind the scenes as well. Muziekgebouw Eindhoven wants events to reflect our society and all the different backgrounds it contains, so that as many people as possible feel welcome. We explain why this diversity is so important.

The power of cultures

Cultural diversity: what exactly is it? Very simply put: people from different cultural backgrounds. When you extend the power of different cultures to the events sector, and especially the music world, it offers an enormous wealth of different musical styles and traditions.

Every country, culture and community has its own music history and associated traditions. By using and embracing these different styles, we create a huge wealth of music that would not exist otherwise. As a result, the music industry naturally becomes more diverse, we reach a wider audience and moreover, more people feel at home. And this is good news for you as a visitor: you encounter other cultures or, conversely, your own and get inspired. You get a taste (sometimes literally) of different cultures and are introduced to new traditions, music or other art forms.

The sense of community and the approachability of events is enhanced by focussing on different cultures as part of the artistic planning. An event is a hugely convenient meeting place for people from different backgrounds. To come together and enjoy all the beauty different cultures have to offer. This can have a positive effect on our society: it allows people to feel more connected and have a better understanding of each other. A great experience for all visitors!

Music: the connecting factor

At Muziekgebouw Eindhoven we know better than anyone that music connects: fortunately, we have experienced this more than once. Music has been a cultural ingredient for thousands of years; the oldest instrument (a flute made of an animal bone) is about 40,000 years old!

Music is one of the most creative and expressive art forms. It tells stories and brings emotions to the surface: few things touch emotionally as deeply as music. Music creates a tremendously strong group feeling. When you look at it this way, concert or event-goers are a community in themselves.

The community feeling is strengthened even more when forces are combined. This is why Muziekgebouw Eindhoven works together with, for instance, the Turkish, Latin American and Indian communities. Together, we organise events where people from the community feel at home, and where everyone gets to know different cultures in a particularly good way.

Muziekgebouw Eindhoven as a meeting place

Cultural diversity plays an important role in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven's artistic planning. Different cultures come together and audiences find a meeting place where all people from Eindhoven and its surroundings find inspiration. We offer various events reflecting the diversity and richness of different musical genres and backgrounds.

A great example is 'Music Around the World'. Inspired by Turkish World Children's Day, it celebrated music from all corners of the world on a grand scale! Together with Turkish Professionals Network Eindhoven and Children's Music Week, we went the extra mile to make it one big party. And we succeeded! Hundreds of children from various music associations joinded the cheerful children's music parade through Eindhoven city centre, on their way to Muziekgebouw Eindhoven.

Merhaba Eindhoven! was also created by working intensively with the Turkish community. Stichting Ik Wil, Mystiek Productions, Music from the Orient and Turkish Professionals Network Eindhoven are working together with Muziekgebouw Eindhoven to create this wonderful day.

This festival is all about Turkish culture and celebrated its first edition last year. It was a huge success and the dazzling performance by Turkish pop diva Sertab Erener was one of the highlights of this day. Following this success - read more about that here - a sequel is of course unavoidable.

Hola Eindhoven embraces the presence of the Latin American community in Eindhoven and is a great collaboration between Centro Latinoamericano de Orientación and Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. This day will introduce us to the beauty (and goodies!) of Latin American culture.
