Early James, born Frederic James Mullis Jr., grew up in Troy, Alabama, a small town with a rich musical history. From a young age, he listened to various music genres, such as blues, folk, and rock 'n' roll, which strongly influenced his musical development. At fifteen, he started playing guitar and writing his own songs, inspired by artists like Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, and Tom Waits. His unique voice and emotional intensity quickly caught the attention of local music enthusiasts. After high school, Early James decided to try his luck in the larger music cities of the South. He moved to Birmingham, where he became an active part of the thriving music scene. There he met Dan Auerbach, and the rest is history...

When Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys attended a performance by Early James, it marked the beginning of a promising career. Auerbach was very impressed with the singer-songwriter from Alabama and signed him to his Easy Eye Sound label. Early James' debut album, "Singing for My Supper," quickly followed, along with widespread acclaim. The fruitful collaboration between James and Auerbach continued after the release of "Singing for My Supper" with the production of James' second album, "Strange Time To Be Alive." This album stands out for Early James' lived-in voice; raw and soulful, with influences of jazz and roots woven throughout the songs. A must-hear for enthusiasts, and especially live.
