Eurovision Song Contest artists in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven

The Eurovision Song Contest began as a technical experiment in television broadcasting: the live, simultaneous, transnational broadcast that Europe has now been watching for almost 70 years was a miracle in the late 1950s.

A short history

In the first edition, each country sent in two songs. Over the years, the format evolved into the groundbreaking, technologically innovative week-long spectacle we now enjoy... but how did the Eurovision Song Contest come to life?

In 1954, when television services were introduced in most European countries in the mid-20th century, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) established the Eurovision Network for the exchange and production of joint television programmes. The European Song Contest was created in an effort to unite the European countries after World War II. The most popular and successful programme the Eurovision Network would produce was the Eurovision Song Contest.

Gigantic spectacle

The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in Switzerland in 1956: due to its geographically central location in Europe, it acted as a natural hub for the terrestrial transmitters needed for this experiment in live, simultaneous, transnational broadcasting. Since then, this annual event has developed into a gigantic spectacle attracting millions of viewers worldwide.
